A Brief Overview to the Penal Code

What is the
Penal Code?

The penal code is a formal set of laws or codes
established by a governing authority in a particular region, state, or
jurisdiction.
The penal code is a comprehensive list of crimes, their
coordinating definitions, and the applicable punishments attached.

Local
jurisdictions, such as states, may develop and subsequently interpret their own
penal codes. As a result, the penal code of California, for example, is
different from another State, such as South Carolina.
 These unique penal codes,
although different in many aspects, still maintain the general uniformity of
the Federal penal code established by the United States Government.

Typically,
penal codes are published in book or document form. Numbers and codes are
attached to each statute and crime. This book is used as the foundation for the
legal system in the particular jurisdiction and is subsequently enforced by the
area’s law enforcement agency.

The presence
of a penal code creates a sense of security within a society. A penal code,
through the establishment of punishments, dissuades individuals from committing
illegal acts.
The penal code is the affirmed establishment of a legal code in
a given area. Any violation of the penal code, meaning any illegal act
committed by an individual or an entity, will be susceptible to the
coordinating punishment under the particular penal code. As a result of this
relationship, any individual or entity who violates the penal code of a given
area should seek the aid of a legal professional to mitigate the charges and
streamline the legal process.
